Liars - Biography

In the early 2000s, Liars burst onto the New York dancepunk scene, the edgiest, darkest, and most substantial of the bands that would get lumped in as part of the post-punk revival. The band's 2001 debut They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top (Mute) was followed by three EPs, and in 2003, original members Angus Andrew (vocals/guitar) and Aaron Hemphill (percussion, guitar, synths) reunited with fellow former Los Angeles resident Julian Gross (drums) for They Were Wrong, So We Drowned (Mute, 2004), an album constructed around the theme of witches.

A year later, Liars relocated to Berlin to record Drum's Not Dead (Mute, 2006), and in 2009 the band returned to Los Angeles for their fifth album, Sisterworld (Mute, 2010). In 2011, Portishead specially invited the band to perform at the ATP I'll Be Your Mirror festival in London. The band then holed up in an isolated cabin north of LA to record 2012's WIXIW (Mute). Liars' most recent album, Mess, was released in spring 2014 for the venerable Mute Records.
