Chicago jazz musician and bandleader Makaya McCraven imbues the work of the legendary Gil Scott-Heron with a vibrant new dimension in the form of We’re New Again. McCraven’s compositions serve as a brilliant companion to the late great artist’s spoken word vocals from his 2007 I’m New Here album, his poignant, timeless words weaving in and out of the lush jazz melodies, atmospheric strings, and lilting piano. McCraven’s musical collaborators are something to be celebrated too, with contributions from harpist Brandee Younger, bassist Junius Paul, and Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker. It’s a heady brew that pays fitting tribute to one of our most fascinating and enduring artists.
