SadGirl’s latest, Water, is an exploration of what it means to grow up in LA, a city precariously balanced between desert and ocean, where water holds power in a peculiar way. It’s not all existential pondering, however — Water is upbeat and lo-fi, with sun-kissed indie melodies and off-kilter soul music influences. “Chlorine” is catchy as hell, a quirky indie anthem. “Little Queenie” sounds like a weirdo pop cover of a long-forgotten R&B stylist. Water is a heartfelt little charmer that really shows SadGirl at their best.
