Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/13/2010
American Primitive guitarist Jack Rose started in the Virginia noise / drone / improv trio Pelt but rose to prominence in the ‘00s as one of his generation’s greatest interpreters of the post-John Fahey style of instrumental acoustic guitar music. Sadly, Rose died far too young in 2009 of a heart condition. An early collaborative record dating from 1998, Via St. Louis finds Rose working with ex-Charalambides multi-instrumentalist Jason Bill. Merging Rose’s raga-infused guitar explorations with the elliptical feedback and fuzz drone of early Charalambides, it’s a hugely successful album. In addition to this the duo incorporate violin, clarinet and electronics into the mix, creating a varied set of textured and melodic improv. Highly recommended.
