Amoeba Review

Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010

Undertow proved to be the album that successfully merged art pretension with industrial metal. As the Seattle grunge sound began started to get comfortable in pedestrian mainstream consciousness in 1993, Tool came out with a sound that was even more challenging to the conventional structure of metal and hard rock with their oppressive, brooding attacks. “Prison Sex” plied listeners with the tension between Maynard James Keenan’s seemingly gentle vocals against Danny Carey’s utterly diverse drumming and Adam Jones’ guitar. The heavy-handed paranoia on “Sober” made for an unlikely hit song, but it got Tool a little closer to their own icons, Black Sabbath. The band’s flirtings with the occult and symbolism also shaded their rep towards something darker and more austere.
