Tyr (CD)
Black Sabbath

Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 06/11/2010
After the departure of lead singer Ozzy Osbourne in 1979, heavy metal icons Black Sabbath went through various iterations, with the sole constant being founding guitarist Tony Iommi. The group’s sound shifted dutifully as popular metal went through its various phases: hair metal, thrash, speed, grunge. Sabbath released Tyr in 1990; it’s their sixteenth album, named for the Norse god of heroics and war. To the extent that many of the songs follow a similar theme – e.g., “The Battle of Tyr,” “Odin’s Court,” “Valhalla” – Tyr is a concept album, and even though Geoff Nicholls’ keyboards are pervasive, this is one of post-Ozzy Sabbath’s darkest and most sinister efforts.
