Theatre Is Evil (LP)
Amanda Palmer
Amoeba Review
Given the theatricality of her voice as a solo artist and the frontwoman of The Dresden Dolls, it’s funny that Amanda Palmer has named her latest album Theatre is Evil. But, given the reverb-laden rock and synth-dance treatment of her latest album, it’s also perhaps a breaking with her past. Her low-registered vocal still cuts through with the exactitude of a scalpel, and her lyrics like “Do It With a Rockstar’s” “Do you want to get drunk and stay the night” refrain are still irresistibly confessional, but that song’s grand, ethereal opening and lush chorus are new (and welcome) territory for Palmer. Songs like Buggles-style ’80s-ness of “Want It Back” or lo-fi shoegazing of “Smile (Pictures or It Didn’t Happen)” might take some getting used to for longtime fans, but enough of Palmer’s persona is still intact to make Theatre is Evil not a complete departure, and its combination of whimsicality and big-payoff sounds should attract plenty of new fans, as well.
