Amoeba Review
08/28/2020
Kelly Finnigan, vocalist for Bay Area retro soulsters Monophonics, can do no wrong on his vibrant, vibed-out solo debut, The Tales People Tell. Channeling classic soul frontmen like Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, Finnigan puts a lot of heart — not to mention songwriting skill — into these richly-textured, luscious compositions. (He wrote, produced, and played most of the instruments on the album.) The sound is big, bold, and powerful, with an urgency beneath the trilling horns and lovely girl group choruses. A must for true soul heads.
