Amoeba Review

08/31/2020

Though their name seems to evoke Delta blues tradition, Welsh outfit Catfish & The Bottlemen hem much closer to their own side of the pond, primarily drawing on the effortless hooks and youthful sneer of ‘90s heroes Oasis, as well as likeminded Britpop-revival bands such as Kasabian and The Fratellis. On The Balance, Catfish go for broke on every song, whether it’s propulsive melancholia building up to the electric guitar-saturated catharsis of “Anything,” the start-and-stop dynamics that drive the endless hooks of “7,” or the sing-a-long bluesy strut of lead single “Longshot.” Make no bones about it, this is an album of good ‘ol fashioned stadium rock, albeit made in an era where there are fewer and fewer of its kind. But, of course, nobody cared about Oasis in the era of grunge bands, right?
