Bratmobile is often referred to as “that other riot grrrl band.” Not as prolific as ideological comrades Bikini Kill, Bratmobile nonetheless was a pioneering riot grrrl group, pushing forward feminist values in the male dominated world of rock music. The band, singer Allison Wolfe, guitarist Erin Smith and drummer Molly Neuman, released only one full-length during its initial phase, 1993’s energetically defining Pottymouth. With average song lengths running barely two minutes, the record offers up blasts of shambolic noisy anger, confrontational lyrics on sexuality and culture and wry humor. Overall the sound is classic early ‘90s DIY indie-punk. While Bratmobile didn’t have anything as anthemic as Bikini Kill’s “Suck My Left One” or “Rebel Girl,” the band was no less passionate. We need more bands like Bratmobile, especially in this sexually regressive, overly commercialized MySpace-rock environment. Pottymouth is a definitive riot grrrl record and essential listening for fans of indie rock and punk.
