Amoeba Review

Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010

Polydistortion was the powerful 1997 debut from Gus Gus, a group of nine multi-talented Icelandic actors, filmmakers, singers, musicians, and cinematographers. It’s an ambient trip-hop auditory odyssey that seems to echo another side to blue Reykjavik, a somber and sexy display of creative minds coming together outside of their usual elements to blow the lid off of all things indie. A driving groove runs the length of the 11-track album (five of those songs exceeding six minutes), beautifully framing the delicate vocalizations, drums, mesmerizing box beats and warping synths. A couple of the highlights are “Is Jesus Your Pal?” and “Polyesterday.”
