Opiate Sun (CD)
Jesu
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/31/2010
Justin Broadrick’s Jesu project continues to evolve with the 2009 release of Opiate Sun. This EP contains some of the most organic music made under the Jesu banner to date. Broadrick teams up with Dave Cochrane and Phil Petrocelli for a set of songs boasting a stronger live feel compared to the carefully measured and electronically enhanced art-rock of past releases. Broadrick’s knack for elevating art-metal sludge, stoner rock and heavily textured shoegaze into absolutely epic songs is still at the heart of Jesu’s music. This is evidenced in the anthemic swell of sound on songs like “Losing Streak,” “Opiate Sun” and “Morning Light.” Recommended.
