So many legends sit on their laurels, content with their status as past boundary-pushers. That's definitely not the case with Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo, who teams up once again with Spanish producer/composer/musician Raul Refree for the inventive, surprising Names of North End Women. The album draws its title as well as its thematic inspiration from a late night walk Ranaldo took through an area of Winnipeg where the streets are all named after women. It's an atmospheric listening experience, haunting and melancholic, strange and beautiful. Don't expect any wailers on this one, though: Ranaldo and Refree steer clear of abrasive guitar noise, instead opting for marimba, vibraphones, and samplers. Thoroughly captivating, this intriguing album feels like a half-remembered, lovely dream.
