Laughter (CD)
The Mighty Lemon Drops
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010
The fourth album for The Mighty Lemondrops, 1989’s Laughter, does little to mark itself as a major (or even minor) move in any direction for the pop band. However, it does reinforce the Brits’ remarkable ability to craft earnest alternative rock with vocal harmonies to quirk things up a bit. The original bassist Tony Linehan, left the group before completion of Laughter and was replaced by Marcus Williams, who would remain a part of the band through their subsequent recordings. A couple of the tracks glint like gold, such as “The Heartbreak Thing” and “Where Do We Go From Heaven,” the latter a beautifully paced song with the kind of jangly guitar that can’t help but fuel more comparisons to Echo and The Bunnymen.
