Landscape (CD)
Future Generations
Amoeba Review
The goodnatured, Brooklyn-based disco-pop band returns with a sophomore album that builds on the success of breakthrough single “Stars” and delves further into their sound without losing the hooks. The title track “Landscape” has a propulsive beat to match its laser synths, though its lyrics go deeper than the sunny veneer, detailing coming through hardship that could apply to a breakup, getting sober or finding god (“you’re on your own ’till you find there is life on the other side”). This is to say Future Generations’ songs are organized for maximum appeal. The Pixies-reffing “Caught Me By Surprise” laces its alt-rock leanings with glowing synths and a mid-song beat pickup; first single “All the Same’s” syncopated beats and pulsing guitars remind us of a young Strokes, and “Take Me There’s” icy beauty sounds like a chilled-out take on Phoenix’s pop bravado. Wherever the needle lands on Landscape, you’re sure to find yourself in welcoming environs.
