Kate & Anna McGarrigle (CD)
Kate & Anna McGarrigle
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 08/17/2010
Sisters Kate & Anna McGarrigle made their beautiful and impressive debut in 1975. The album admittedly had some mighty muscle behind it, as it was produced by the highly regarded folk producer Joe Boyd and included a cast of prestigious musicians like Lowell George, Tony Rice, and John Cale. But the sisters’ sweet harmonies and knack for writing heart-wrenching songs is what truly shines here. Every song on this release offers insight and depth in a poetic, unique, and captivating way, from the opening “Kiss & Say Goodbye” to the heartbreaking “Heart Like A Wheel” (later covered and made famous by Linda Ronstadt) to the amazing “Go Leave” (which could rival Dory Previn in the self- deprecating lyrics department). There is not a sour number on this release. An absolutely solid and beautiful listen, this album comes highly recommended.
