Humble Beginnings: The Scott Engel Sessions (CD)
Scott Walker
Amoeba Review

1960s pop idol turned experimental crooner Scott Walker recorded a batch of songs as Scott Engel at age 15 that were all but lost after he took off (with the help of massive teen adoration) in The Walker Brothers. This wonderful collection brings to light the tracks of a young and gifted talent in all his rockabilly glory. From the bouncy “The Livin’ End,” inspired by the king of rock ‘n’roll, Elvis Presley, and rockabilly hero Ronnie Dawson, to the soft 1950s ballad “All I Do Is Dream Of You,” this album is Scott Walker as you’ve never heard him. While most of the material here makes it hard to believe this voice would later be the melodramatic crooner we all adore, there is no denying his early talent as a singer. His range and depth are just on the verge of fully blossoming, which certainly makes for an interesting musical ride for any Walker fanatic. This material is in no way on par with his later tracks, but it is quite an enjoyable listen for fans of Walker and 1950s teen pop and rockabilly.
