Fruit Bats

On Gold Past Life, Fruit Bats serve up a glorious slice of existential indie pop. The album is rife with lushly orchestrated and richly textured melodies; there’s a sense of soothing nostalgia to these blissed-out ballads. But listen a little closer and you’ll hear the wistfulness of singer/songwriter Eric D. Johnson’s lyrics, the slight air of melancholy as he’s reflecting on days gone by and opportunities passed. It’s a delicate balancing act, this melding of moods, but Fruit Bats pulls it off with aplomb, crafting an achingly beautiful collection of songs with all the poignancy and poetry of life itself.
