German composer Nils Frahm is renowned for combining sequenced synths and drum machines with neo-romantic piano work, as well as crafting beautiful, intimate ambient pieces with such minimal instrumentation they seem to hardly exist. While the first entry in Frahm’s Encores series heavily favored the latter approach, his third and final entry is as maximalist as the composer gets, with pulsing, syncopated rhythms and a cornucopia of textures and timbres: mixing bells, keyboards, synths, and beyond in a way that is intoxicatingly hypnotic.
