Amoeba Review

08/06/2020

The theme of British pop group Bastille's new album, aptly named Doom Days, is one of desperately celebrating life and ignoring/avoiding the darkness of current affairs. Even the soaring, dancefloor-ready “Quarter Past Midnight,” which is obstentively about a night out on the town, contains lyrics about running away from the truth. The band may have shied away from their more overt political commentary in the past, but this is still intelligent pop music; the equally catchy “Million Pieces” references being grilled about politics while at a party. But Bastille's more sober lyrics still come packaged in radio-friendly melodies with beats ready for the clubs, and the smooth, near-ballad, “Those Nights,” offers the eternal message of trying to find someone to go home with.
