Critical Beatdown (CD)
Ultramagnetic MC's
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010
Unquestionably one of the now-classic albums of the second-wave of hip-hop, Ultramagnetic MCs’ 1988 release Critical Beatdown is necessary listening for anyone who claims to be a fan of the genre. Aside from introducing the world to Kool Keith (hello!), the album struts a consciousness in production quality and introduces methods that had not previously been considered. Moving from the disco record cuts of the hip-hop originators and into dirtier, rougher cuts, the Bronx crew began to define the sound of this newer and more rebellious style—tracks like “Ego Trippin’” remain a classic over 20 years later. The title track, “Critical Beatdown,” booms with a booty-shaking bass that’s as wholesale fun as anything from Public Enemy or Run-DMC.
