Bright Black Heaven (CD)
Blaqk Audio
Amoeba Review
Second record from this dark, dancey AFI side project lets Jade Puget and singer Davey Havok indulge their sexy club-rat side, and it seems to be pretty popular with the fans too. The tunes are moody confessional synth-pop with a definite early-'90s retro edge, quite a bit like Depeche Mode in their Violator period, though Davey Havok's smooth tenor vocals have a somewhat lighter feel than Dave Gahan's stentorious baritone. The lyrical themes are right up the Depeche alley though -- lots of hedonism and betrayal, sin and redemption, all set to fast, lurid beats that could inspire some naughty behavior (or at least some dirty dancing). Fans of classic industrial electro, or fans of two sexy guys with a hyperactive drum machine, will likely be seduced by this.
