Amoeba Review

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan may seem like an unlikely musical pair, but after listening to their 2006 album, Ballad of the Broken Seas, you immediately get the sense that these artists were meant to record together. Lanegan's dark and ominous voice paints a picture of a weathered seaman coming home in need of something only the sweet and feminine voice of Campbell can provide. Although Lanegan leads most of the vocals as Campbell infuses her clear and pretty harmonies, she is the one responsible for writing and producing the majority of the tracks. Ironically, “Revolver,” the only track written by Lanegan, may actually be best of the bunch. Folk music at its best and simplest form, this album won the 2006 Mercury Music Prize.
