Amoeba Review

07/28/2020

Rising star saxophonist Binker Golding's new album is refreshingly straightforward, throwback jazz with skilled but understated accompaniment from his quartet, which features Joe Armon-Jones on keys, Dan Casimir on bass and Sam Jones on drums. It's a step away from his more fusion-oriented work with drummer Moses Boyd (as Binker and Moses), with nods to Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz. Armon-Jones shines on the melodic “You, That Place, That Time” and Casimir in his solo on the warm “And I Like Your Feathers”; unflashy but accomplished, the album has an overall warmth to it that ties in with Golding's reference to feathers as a symbol of hope, from the poetry of Emily Dickinson.
