Amoeba Review

07/28/2020

Shannon Lay of FEELS and Ty Segall's Freedom Band makes her Sub Pop debut with her solo folk project. The quiet and introspective August features Segall himself and Mikal Cronin, and includes covers of Karen Dalton and Nick Drake tunes – obvious influences for this young folk artist carving out her own path. Highlights are “Death Up Close” in which her vocals are like an incantation over the acoustic fingerpicking, interspersed with Cronin's saxophone, and especially the sweet and slightly psychedelic “Nowhere” with its harder edged chorus.
